Stock Market Reacts as 911.5M SpaceX Shares Ready for Trade

SpaceX is on the verge of facing significant market dynamics as the eligibility of up to 911.5 million shares for trading could prompt selling by certain employees and early investors of the company. This follows the company’s entry into the public market not long ago with a record-breaking IPO. On recent trading, SpaceX’s stock experienced a notable drop of nearly 14%, closing at $108.27, which positions the shares about 20% below their initial public offering price of $135. This marks the second-largest one-day decline for the company since its stock became publicly tradable.

The company’s decision to initially release only a small fraction of its total shares created a limited supply, which in turn spurred strong demand post-IPO. With the upcoming release of more shares, the supply available to investors will substantially increase, possibly leading to short-term volatility in the stock market. However, it’s important to note that the unlocking of these shares does not necessitate an immediate sell-off of all 911.5 million shares. Employees and early investors are at liberty to either sell their shares or hold onto them. Those who purchased shares at significantly lower valuations before the IPO might see this as an opportune time to realize profits.

SpaceX is opting for a staggered release schedule for these restricted shares, rather than relying on a single, traditional lock-up period. This approach will see additional shares made available for trading later this year, potentially releasing billions more Class A shares into the market. Notably, Elon Musk and other top executives are under a longer restriction period, meaning their shares remain locked beyond the current release. Since Musk’s shares represent a substantial part of SpaceX’s overall value, the eventual unlocking of executive shares will be a critical event for investors to watch.

Furthermore, the increased number of publicly traded shares can also influence SpaceX’s representation in the Nasdaq-100 index. Currently, its weighting stands at about 1%, but this could potentially rise to over 3.5%, contingent on the stock price and number of shares available during the next index adjustment. While the unlocking of shares might exert short-term selling pressure, it does not alter the fundamental business operations of SpaceX. Investors are likely to continue concentrating on the company’s financial performance, its growth trajectory, investments in artificial intelligence, and the execution of its long-term strategic plans.
