Many supermarket shoppers bring home a pot of basil only to see it wither away within weeks. While it might be easy to blame inadequate care for its decline, the real problem often starts before the basil even leaves the store. Typically, the lush, green basil sold in supermarkets consists of numerous young plants crowded into a single pot. This arrangement gives the plant a fuller look but also means that the seedlings are in constant competition for essential resources like water, sunlight, and nutrients, ultimately weakening the entire plant.
There’s a straightforward solution to this common issue: separate the basil into smaller groups and replant them individually. To do this, carefully remove the basil from its container and gently divide the roots into three or four sections, ensuring as many roots are kept intact as possible. Each section should then be transferred into its own pot with fresh compost, watered thoroughly, and placed in a warm, bright area.
Regular trimming of the basil’s tops encourages bushier growth and helps delay premature flowering. By providing each plant more room to thrive, these separated sections are more likely to remain healthy and productive over time.
Testing this approach with a single pot of supermarket basil yielded positive results. After dividing the plant into four separate sections, three continued to grow robustly, producing fresh leaves for use over the subsequent month.
By offering supermarket basil more space to grow, a once short-lived kitchen herb can become a lasting staple for home cooking and gardening.
