Planning a trip on the new Steel Cotton Rail Trail? Here’s what you need to know. This 62-mile (100km) route from Manchester to Sheffield is a 14-section, “rail-pegged” trail that’s easy to explore.

Getting There: The trail is designed for car-free travel. Every section starts and ends at a train station, most of which are on the Hope Valley Line. You can easily take a train from Manchester Piccadilly or Sheffield to your chosen start point.

Choosing Your Walk: The 14 sections offer huge variety. Check the trail’s official website for descriptions. You’ll find “metropolitan mooches,” “summit-fiend” moorland hikes, and easy, level canal and riverside walks perfect for families.

Navigation: The entire route is now fully waymarked with stickers. For extra confidence, you can download free printable PDF maps for each section from the trail’s website. GPX files for digital navigation are also available.

What to See: This is a “post-industrial” heritage trail. Key highlights include the 1796 Peak Forest Tramway, the historic Bugsworth Basin, the dramatic viaducts and Millennium Walkway in New Mills, and the pastoral River Goyt.

This new trail is an “almost perfect” set of autumn walks. It’s a fantastic, accessible way to discover the “eye-calming” landscapes and rich history of the Peak District.
