During the 31st Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) held in Kingston, Jamaica, Qatar reaffirmed its support for both the ISA and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Representing Qatar, Omar Ali Al Ali, Secretary of the Standing Committee of the Convention on the Law of the Sea, highlighted the country’s commitment to balancing the responsible exploitation of marine resources with the imperative need to protect the marine environment.
In his address, Al Ali underscored the importance of fostering greater dialogue and transparency among member states. He also emphasized the role of credible scientific research and comprehensive environmental assessments in enhancing the quality of decision-making within the ISA. These elements, he noted, are crucial for ensuring that the management of international seabed resources is conducted in a manner that aligns with international law and benefits all of humanity.
Qatar also expressed its dedication to collaborating with all member nations in supporting the ISA’s mandate. The country emphasized its willingness to work alongside other states to further the Authority’s goals of managing seabed resources effectively and sustainably. This collaborative approach is intended to ensure that the exploitation of these resources is done in an environmentally responsible manner.
The ISA plays a crucial role in regulating activities related to marine mineral resources on the seabed, particularly those found in international waters. Qatar’s reaffirmed commitment to the ISA and UNCLOS underscores its recognition of the importance of international cooperation and adherence to established maritime laws to safeguard marine ecosystems while utilizing their resources.
